Download Full Datasheet

CR12Mo1V1 is a commonly used cold work die steel, also known as D3 (AISI standard) or 1.2080 (German DIN standard), Japanese standard JIS: SKD11。 It has high hardness, wear resistance, cutting performance, and stability, suitable for various mold applications, mainly used for manufacturing cold work molds, cold work molds, cutting tools, cutting tools, and mold components.
After appropriate heat treatment and quenching, Cr12Mo1V1 mold steel can achieve a high level of hardness, usually reaching 60-62 HRC, providing excellent wear resistance and cutting performance.
Due to its high hardness and suitable composition, Cr12Mo1V1 mold steel has excellent wear resistance and is particularly suitable for mold applications that require long-term or high-speed processing.
Cr12Mo1V1 mold steel has high strength and rigidity, can maintain shape stability, is not easily deformed or broken, and is suitable for manufacturing molds and cutting tools with strict requirements for size and shape.
Due to its high carbon and chromium content, Cr12Mo1V1 mold steel has good cutting performance, is easy to process and shape, and is suitable for machining operations such as cutting, milling, and drilling.
Cr12Mo1V1 mold steel can maintain good stability in high temperature environments and has strong resistance to thermal fatigue, making it suitable for manufacturing molds and tools that are resistant to high temperatures and cold temperatures.

Cr12Mo1V1, also known as AISI D3 cold working steel, also known as DIN 1.2080 (Werkstoff) and JIS SKD1, is a 12% chromium alloy steel. Due to the presence of a large amount of hard carbides in the steel matrix, D3 cold worked steel has high wear resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear, moderate toughness, stable size, high compressive strength, and cannot be hardened again. AISI D3 type cold work tool steel undergoes oil quenching treatment; Although small sections can be gas quenched using vacuum after austenitization. Therefore, tools made of D3 type cold work tool steel are often brittle during the hardening process. D2 tool steel is the most commonly used steel in Group D. D3 cold working steel contains 1.5% to 2.35% carbon and 12% chromium.

Cold work tool steel Cr12Mo1V1 Forging

Preheat to 900-950 ° C and then raise the temperature to 1050-1100 ° C. Soak until evenly heated. Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel is relatively hard at high temperatures. Therefore, the initial hammering must be very light, and the temperature must not be lower than 1020 ° C before the metal begins to flow. The final forging should not be carried out below 900 ° C.

Cold work Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel Annealing

Heat the Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel evenly to 850-870 ° C, soak it thoroughly, and then slowly cool it to 650 ° C in a furnace at a rate not exceeding 25 ° C per hour. Then, these parts can be air cooled. This should result in a maximum Brinell hardness of 248.

Cr12Mo1V1  Alloy tool steel Stress Relieving

Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel Hardening

Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel is extremely sensitive to overheating during the hardening process – do not overheat.
Slowly preheat to 800-850 ° C, quickly rise to 950-970 ° C and soak until completely balanced. Oil quenching.

Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel tempering

Cr12Mo1V1 cold working steel should be cooled to room temperature and immediately tempered. The parts should be placed in a tempering furnace and slowly raised to the required tempering temperature. Each inch thickness requires tempering for 1 hour.

Nitriding of Cr12Mo1V1

Nitriding treatment is a chemical heat treatment technique that allows nitrogen atoms to penetrate the surface of a workpiece under specific temperature and medium conditions. After nitriding treatment, the surface hardness of Cr12Mo1V1 steel is significantly improved while maintaining excellent core toughness. In addition, nitriding treatment can enhance the wear resistance, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and high temperature resistance of D3 steel, thereby extending its service life

Process flow of nitriding treatment
The process flow of nitriding treatment includes the following steps:
Pre cleaning: Remove dirt and impurities from the surface of the workpiece to ensure smooth subsequent processing.
Nitriding: Place the workpiece in a specialized nitriding furnace, and under the combined action of high temperature and nitrogen medium, nitrogen atoms gradually infiltrate the surface of the workpiece. This process requires strict control of temperature and time to ensure that the quality and depth of the nitride layer meet expectations.
Cooling and post-treatment: After nitriding is completed, the workpiece will undergo sufficient cooling and then post-treatment, such as polishing or spraying, to further improve its surface smoothness and corrosion resistance.
Specific application examples of nitriding treatment
Cr12Mo1V1 steel, after nitriding treatment, is particularly suitable for manufacturing compact mold parts with extremely high requirements for wear resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. For example, Cr12Mo1V1 material treated with nitridation can be used to manufacture cutting tools, molds, measuring tools, crankshafts, camshafts, gears and other components. These application fields have high requirements for the surface hardness and wear resistance of the material

Heat Treatment of Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel

Cr12Mo1V1 tool steel requires hardening and tempering to achieve optimal performance. In order to achieve maximum accuracy, Cr12Mo1V1 steel parts should undergo stress relief after rough machining operations. The stress should be released at 648 ° C (1200 ° F) for one hour and then slowly cooled..
