AISI D3 tool steel is a high carbon (Min 2.0 – Max , 2.35% C), with high chromium Cold work tool steel material (11-13% chrome metal), So The Tool Steel D3 metal material with Very Very high wear resisting properties, heat treatment can be reached to 54-62 HRc. D3 steel have nice wear resistant property. Even its hardness higher than D2 Steel. but toughness lower than AISI D2. Cold work STEEL. D3 tool steel hardens in air with a low order of movement and offers a measure of corrosion resistance while polished. The high chromium percentage gives it nice corrosion-resisting properties in the hardened condition and low temperature. D3’s mechanical properties are very sensitive to heat treatment. D3 tool steel is provided in diameter round, flat bar, and square block, as well as ground flat stock, drill rod and worm screw.

D3 Steel manufacture Data
AISI D3 Steel Forged – Grade ASTM A681
First, For forging the AISI D3 tool steel should be heat to 700°C (1292°F) slowly and uniformly. Then heating to 1050-1100°C rapidly and Soak thoroughly. Below 900°C, no forging. After finished forging, slowly cool down in furnace.
as necessary, stopping work when the temperature drops below 1700°F(926°C). The delivery state of AISI D3 steel should be annealed after forging always.
Heat Treatment for AISI D3 Tool Steel
AISI D3 steel alloy should be pre-heated very slowly to 815℃ (1500°F) and then temperature can be increased to 1010°C (1850°F). then keep at 1010°C (1850°F) for 20 to 45 minutes and air cool quenched.
- Annealing of ASTM AISI-D3
Annealing for D3 tool steel material, that should be heat to 871°C to 898°C (1600 to 1650°F), then by slowly cooling at 6°C per hour or less in heat treatment furnace. Suitable precautions should be taken to prevent excessive carburization or deodorization.
- Stress Relieving SAE D3 Steel Material
When need to relieve the strains of machine, slowly heating D3 steel grade to 566°C to 676°C (1050°-1250°F), soak equalize, and then cool in room (Air Strain Relieving).
- Hardening AISI D3 Tool Steel
Slowly pre-heat to 750°C to 800°C and keep on the temperature until grade steel D3 material is unsure heated thoroughly. Then heat to 1000°C to 1040°C. Hold the D3 tool steel block at the hardening temperature until completely and uniformly heated.
- Quenching of D3 steel works piece
