SAE D2 tool steel is a high carbon (1.4-1.6% C), high chromium Cold tool steel (11-13% chrome), and with Very high wear resisting properties, heat treatment can be reached to 60-62 HRc. D2 steel have very wear resistant property but not as tough as lower alloy steel. Cold work D2 tool steel hardens in air with a low order of movement and offers a measure of corrosion resistance while polished. The high chromium percentage gives it nice corrosion-resisting properties in the hardened condition and low temperature. D2’s mechanical properties are very sensitive to heat treatment. D2 tool steel is provided in diameter round, flat bar, and square block, as well as ground flat stock, drill rod and worm screw.

- AISI D2 Steel Forged – Grade ASTM A681
For forging the AISI D2 tool steel should be heat to 700°C (1292°F) slowly and uniformly. Then heating to 900-1040°C (1652-1904°F) rapidly and Soak thoroughly. After finished forging, slowly cool down in furnace.

- Heat Treatment for AISI D2 Tool Steel
AISI D2 steel alloy should be pre-heated very slowly to 815℃ (1500°F) and then temperature can be increased to 1010°C (1850°F). then keep at 1010°C (1850°F) for 20 to 45 minutes and air cool quenched.
- Annealing of ASTM D2
Annealing for D2 tool steel material, that should be heat to 871°C to 898°C (1600 to 1650°F), then by slowly cooling at 4.4°C (40°F) per hour or less in heat treatment furnace. Suitable precautions should be taken to prevent excessive carburization or decarburization.
- Stress Relieving SAE D2 Steel Material
When need to relieve the strains of machine, slowly heating D2 steel grade to 566°C to 676°C (1050°-1250°F), soak equalize, and then cool in room (Air Strain Relieving).
- Hardening AISI D2 Tool Steel
Slowly pre-heat to 732°C to 787°C (1350°F-1450°F) and keep on the temperature until grade steel D2 material is heated thoroughly. Then heat to 983°C to 1010°C (1800°-1850°F). Hold the D2 tool steel block at the hardening temperature until completely and uniformly heated.
- Quenching of D2

The tempering temperature of material D2 steel varies according to the required hardness. D2 steel can exercise 204 degrees C Rockwell C a hardness of 61 and 537 degrees C (1000 degrees F) Rockwell C hardness 54.
